After a stunning match-winning National Basketball League performance against the Adelaide 36ers last Thursday, New Zealand Breakers big man Gary Wilkinson has taken out the iiNet NBL Championship Player of the Week honour for Round Five.
The American redhead scored an NBL season-high 29 points for the Breakers and added nine rebounds, one assist and one block to help the defending champs score a 99-90 victory over the Sixers.
Wilkinson made 13-of-18 shots from the field (72%) including 3-of-5 three-pointers, pouring in 10 points in the final period to seal the victory for New Zealand.
His efforts ensured the Breakers celebrated their opening home match at their regular venue of North Shore Events Centre with a win on the night they raised their 2010/11 championship banner and retired the singlet of former captain Paul Henare.
Melbourne Tigers star Patty Mills was also a leading contender for Player of the Week honours in Round Five. Mills helped guide the Tigers to a pair of wins last week, with an away victory over the Sydney Kings followed by a home W against the Cairns Taipans. For the week, Mills averaged 13.5 points, 9.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds.
Wilkinson’s Breakers teammate Cedric Jackson also was considered for the award after recording 16 points, 11 assists, two rebounds, two steals and one block against the Sixers.
Others considered for Player of the Week for Round Five included Diamon Simpson (Adelaide 36ers), Aaron Bruce (Sydney Kings), Jamar Wilson (Cairns Taipans), Brad Robbins (Perth Wildcats), Cameron Tragardh (Melbourne Tigers), Kevin Lisch (Perth Wildcats), Julian Khazzouh (Sydney Kings) and Mat Campbell (Wollongong Hawks).
